For a full century, Nona has been at the center of our family. If you've ever sat at her table, tasted her pastry, listened to her poetry, or admired one of her paintings, you've felt it.
Record a voice note — a favourite story, a memory, a wish — and we'll weave it into something beautiful for her.
Leave Nona a story
Each piece below is a favourite Nona story, recorded as a voice note. Please leave one for her. We'll play every single one on her 100th.

Nona, one of my favourite memories of you is all those summers you spent with us in Perth. You'd come for weeks at a time and you were almost always there for my birthday. And every year we had the same ritual. You'd take me to the bookstore and let me choose as many books as I wanted. And I mean as many as I wanted. Not one book, not two books, stacks, dozens. I'd walk out of there like the luckiest boy in the world. Then I'd spend the whole year trying to read every single one before you came back, so we could do it all over again the next summer. You gave me one of the greatest gifts anyone has ever given me. A love of books, literature, and a good story. And now, more than 25 years later, it's still one of my favourite things in the world. Every time I walk into a bookstore, I think of you. Happy 100th birthday, Nona. I love you so much. Thank you for all the stories.
Tijana
I always think of Nona when I'm busy teaching Cristina Rossetti to our matric students, and it is always such a special time for me because as I'm reciting the poem, I think of Nona and how she recited for us all the time. Love you my Nona, happy happy birthday!
Mara
You have always been the most kind, the most caring, the most loving mother. That is why we all love you so much, and each other.
Zivan
One of my favorite memories with Nona is spending two weeks with her in Plettenberg Bay, where we'd spend all day and all night painting. I think this is something in my life that really helped to inspire me to become the somewhat artist that I am today. Thank you, Nona.
Luka
One of my favourite memories with Nona is when we used to sit together and she would knit beanies on a rocking chair, and she'd make sure to add a stripe to every beanie to show that they were handmade with love, and how she always keeps us warm when it's cold out. Love you lots, Nona.

I just wanted to share something about my Nona. What most stands out isn't just her 100 years, it's her love for life and the love for all of us. Nona has always been there to lend an ear, offer advice, whether it's in love, in business, or just in life in general. She always shows up for us. She's always been present, always giving, whether it's through her cooking, her baking, or just spending some time together. You can really feel how much she cares. Some of the best memories are just being with her, having a nightcap, listening to her stories, laughing. She makes the simple moments feel important. And even now, at 100, she hasn't changed. She still sits with my son Christopher and tells him the same stories that she's told each of her grandchildren and keeps them entertained. Stories about Christopher Robin, etc. And her love just shines straight through. That is who she is, full of life, full of love, and we are so lucky to have her.

Luce moje sunce — I have so many good memories with you, and I'm so grateful to have you as a part of me. I have always loved listening to the wealth of stories you share so freely. Stories of you growing up, putting oranges in your mouth to straighten your teeth, or stealing wine and getting drunk while none of the adults were paying attention at the age of three. Or stories of our ancestors, your father's path from the monastery to South Africa, with seeds in his pocket and a fiancee he never married, his budding vegetable empire, and how he ultimately met your mother years later in the unlikeliest of circumstances. I also loved hearing tales of you and Ranko — the way you met, the way he sang, how your mother loved him best. Those glimpses into your love for each other have always been so touching and made me proud to have both of you as my grandparents. I've repeated so many of these stories to my own friends over the years, and in fact, I think those closest to me could probably recite a few if you asked them to. Nona, you are truly one of a kind, and I have learned so much from you. There is the art of storytelling itself — be dramatic and take your time, be funny and don't take yourself too seriously, be specific and detail-orientated in your memories, be consistent and repetitive, not changing a word in your tale no matter how much time has passed between tellings, oh, and to always enunciate. I also learned how to say I love you ten different ways and sing a few nursery rhymes in Serbo-Croat. I learned who you are and who my family is beyond just the names, but all the details of their lives and the gossip. And I learned how to cook and entertain for a party without breaking a sweat or stressing, and how to stretch dough across a table until it's see-through. "Ja te volim od njeba do zemlje"
John
Hello Nona, happy birthday for your 100th. My memory with you is the swan chasing us in Margaret River. It was just hysterical. Love you lots, Nona.
Sonono
Blessed birthday, my beautiful Nona. The most beautiful memory I have of you is when we sat in Mili's sitting room and we spoke about energy. Remember, you were telling me, you know I can feel whether someone is good or bad by just their energy. And I'm like, but it's just the names. I told her, I said, Nona, I actually have the same thing. And we laughed about it. And you whip a mean pavlova. I want to say, I want to whisper, Mili tries, but hers doesn't come close to yours. And you whip a mean, mean pavlova and I miss it. But thank you, Nona. You are so loved and you're such a blessing to us. And happy, happy, happy, blessed, blessed hundred years. And may you have many more to come. We will still need you here. Love you so much. It's Sonono.
Sanele
Happy 100th birthday, Nona. It's Sanele Lekhoza here, wishing you everything of the best for the year ahead. I'd like to particularly share a memory of the first time I was ever offered brown liquor. You gave me a sip from your glass, and it was in that moment I realised that that's not my favourite type of liquor. But I remember that you had a very nice chuckle at my expense in that moment, and it's something that lives with me for a very long time. I do wish you everything of the best. I wish you all the health and abundance of joy and blessings. Happy birthday, Nona, from all of us with love.
Leanne
Dear Auntie Lucy, I just want to say this is a remarkable achievement. I've known you for many, many years and then reconnected again. The best shortbread ever, just like my granny's. It's the only one that could make shortbread just like my granny. I've always enjoyed all your stories, always, in many languages, and all your wisdom, and all the funny things that you have to tell. Your family is fantastic because of you, and you've held everybody together and been the matriarch of the most wonderful environment. I'm very grateful that I could get to be part of it. Love you lots, and enjoy your day.
Aleksandar
Happy 100th birthday, Nona! With so much love from Aleks, Danielle, and your soon-to-be great-grandchild, all the way from San Diego, California. One of my favourite memories growing up was coming over for Sunday lunch. I'll never forget the endless trays of strudel, running around in the backyard with all the cousins, and the excitement when you brought out that tin of sweets. However, we all knew exactly which one we wanted. The long rectangular one wrapped in gold paper, and it always turned into a playful battle to get it first. You had a way of making everyone feel so welcome, and no one ever left your home without a full belly and a full heart. Those moments mean more than words can say. Wishing you the happiest 100th birthday. We love you so much.
Merci
Dear Nona, happy 100. I hope you have a blessed, blessed day, and I know we haven't met at all, but Milis told me so much about you, and I hope that day is as special as you are, knowing that you've spent a whole century living, living, knowing all, seeing all different things. It's just really amazing, and I hope you have a nice, blessed day. Bye-bye.
Natasha
Carissima Auntie Luća, wishing you an absolutely amazing 100th birthday. And when I think of you, I think of Shakespeare, of poetry, and of expression. You were one of my very first inspirations. You will always be in our hearts. We love you dearly, Natasha, Alfredo, Giulia, Sigourney, and Dylan.
Lara
Happy, happy 100th birthday, Auntie Lucy. This is Lara and Thierry, all the way from Belgium, thinking of you on this incredibly special day. You are remembered by me as a child, and as a lover of fashion, as a remarkably elegant and amazing woman with her signature hairstyle and just an icon. And truly I can say the beauty is not only outside, it's in. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say have a wonderful day and enjoy your family.
Tereza
Hello, I'm Tereza Medhurst, ni Vojvodic. I'm known, and my sister Lucy Antunovic, and the late Mary Francescutti, were all known as the Vojvodic girls. And Mary, my late sister, was one of Lucy's best friends, and they used to go out with their husbands and dining and dancing in those days. And I remember as a child, and my sister Lucy remembers as a child, growing up, that Lucy was always fashion conscious, and she wore beautiful hats, and she always looked stunning. And she's still stunning, and we love her dearly, and I'm very, very happy to be part of this party. Thank you, God bless, Theresa, the Vojvodic girl. Bye, love you lots.
Pietertjie
I remember her saying to me several times, "Pietertjie, ti si pravi konavoski" Thank you.
Gundo
My best memories with Nona is she loved to recite poems, share her good life stories, and sharing recipes with me, and also giving me life advice such as "love your mom and take care of her."
Lucia
Hello, it's Lucia, my auntie Lu, who is also Lucia, to which brings, as always, brought me so much love. Big hugs from the word go. When I was a little girl, she — I could just remember the first hug from her, and not so much the cakes and all of the rest, but the love and the wonderful excitement always around her. If it wasn't going to some show with Milica and all of the rest, we took up a whole row in Joburg, and also the love which she gave so much to us for little things that she thought were cute. And also, I loved Auntie Lu so much. She was, for me, a model of beauty. She had elegance. She had everything. Oh, my Auntie Lu, happy 100th birthday. It's well worth celebrating. Love you so much.
Andrew
Thank you, Auntie Lucy, for looking after me 78 years ago when I had scarlet fever. Our family loved you so then, all that time ago, and we still love you now. All the best with lots of love, Andrew.
Nadia
Nona, I will never forget how magnificently you recited poetry for me in my office, and how clear you were about Dr. Patrick's private schedule, and when he's lecturing students, and when he's in his office, and also how clear you are about your state of health — that will notify your family that you need medical attention, and you're always ever so right. You've been so ill, and yet you've been able to overcome it, and get through it, and you are absolutely an inspiration, and I am so deeply honoured to know you, and of course your lovely family, and I want to wish you the most fantastic 100th year, blessed with good health, and to send you all my love, and I'm always at your disposal, and I thank you for being part of my life. It's truly a great, great privilege. Happy, happy birthday, a happy, healthy year to you. May you be blessed, Nona. All my love, Nadia.
Dr Kussel
Dear Nona, what a marvellous milestone you have reached to 100 years of age. This is Dr Kussel, on behalf of my wife and myself, we remember you with fond fond memories, especially your children, singling out all three daughters, and your son. We spent many happy hours at the Touchdown restaurant, and we'll never forget this, and I spent many happy hours looking after your family, and helping them, and will still help them, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control. We have to be in London for my grand-nephew's wedding at the end of May, and we'll only be back in mid-June, otherwise we would certainly be with you. Please excuse us, but we will be in contact with you. Lots and lots of love, and thank you for thinking of us and your wonderful invitation. Certainly we will see you at some stage afterwards, when we are back. Lots of love to all of you, from Dr and Mrs Kussel, and my blessing to you is that you should have a further peaceful life, free of any illness or suffering, and just be your usual self, the icon of the family. Lots of love from all of us.
Aggie
Hi Auntie Lou, Aggie here. Just to say how many, many memories I have of going to Houghton for holidays when I was a young child, and the wonderful, wonderful times we had at your home, so filled with love and laughter and excitement. Auntie Lou, it's not what you say, but how you make and have always made me feel very, very special. And that is a unique quality of being able to make somebody feel better for having been with you in your presence, and that I've always felt. Thank you, Auntie Lou. Love you always.
Kyte
Auntie Lucy, always sharing, whether it's poetry, recipes, stories, or laughter. I have a wonderful memory of you teaching us how to make xristole. We love you and celebrate how you've touched all our lives with your creativity and passion.
Marion
Dear Lucy, a century of life is truly wonderful. Congratulations and heartfelt wishes for a future filled with happiness and wellness. God bless.
Athlee
Dear Lucy Athlee, I will never forget the day I first met you when I was just a young girl of 19, and you were so happy, welcomed me, made me feel at home, and introduced me to your lovely, beautiful family. What a privilege. God bless you, Lucy. Amen.
Ivan
I remember working at Durban Deep, and Luca would say to me, you got to work for yourself, you're never going to get rich working for other people. That was great advice, so thank you for that one. Also, Luca introduced me to the song "O Sole Mio, Sta 'nfronte a te" which was a great song, I'd never heard of it before, and it's my favorite song, one of my favorites, gives me a lot of joy and hope. And lastly, another nice memory is all the amazing lunches at Durban Deep, and I remember Luca saying that they provide these meals because it's the only proper meal a lot of the workers will get all day, so they got to get one good meal every day. They were better than good, they were amazing. And those are a few of my recollections, hope you enjoy them.
Denise Blieden
Dearest Luca, happy 100th birthday to you. What an amazing achievement for one of the most inspiring, beautiful, and smart ladies I have ever known. I met you during my days at Saxonwold Primary School, where Milica and I became friends. I remember fondly the days spent at your home, enjoying your warmth and hospitality. In addition, each of my siblings were friends and classmates of your other children, Ranka, Mara, Savo, Risto, and Drago. Once again, years later, we were reunited when my husband, Mervyn, worked for your family business. I remember him saying what an astute and great businesswoman you were, and how he admired you so much. He loved your cooking too. Fast forward to December 2024, during one of the saddest times in my life, when Milica appeared like an angel to help me navigate the complexities and heartbreak of my mom's illness. She said it was bashert, and I believe it was. What a coincidence that I should get to meet you again, and then have the joy of sharing a beautiful Sunday birthday lunch with you and your family at Milica's house. I will never ever forget the warmth and love shown to me by you and your family. We are forever connected. May you have more years of health, joy, happiness, and comfort as you celebrate this remarkable milestone. With all my love, and love from my entire family, Denise Bleden.
Nadine
The wonderful memories I have of Auntie Lucy is, one, her delicious fruitcake that we received every year at Christmas time. It was full of fruit, brandy, and lasted for ages, and it was absolutely scrumptious. I also have fond memories of her and Durka standing in the kitchen with a table covered in filo pastry that they had made, and all the delicious strudels that they made from it. The cheese strudel was my absolute favourite. I wish you a very happy birthday, and thank you for these wonderful memories.
Helen
Happy birthday, darling Luca. It's Helen, and I was at school with Milica in Lausanne, Switzerland. I remember you for all your big hugs and happy smiles. Such a warm, beautiful lady. All the best, my darling.
Dr. Milica
Kuma Luca, a wonderful lady with many talents. She is hardworking, cooking, recites poems. She was an artist. She was always doing a lot of things. She's a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. She's also godmother to my children. I was working Sundays in Baragwanath Hospital, always worried how my husband was managing with my son while I was at work and not at home. He would go to Savo Sakota's family on Sundays, and I have a photo that my son was happily smiling in the arms of a beautiful lady. So she used to help him. Thank you. It's Milica. Dr. Milica, as Kuma Luca calls me. Thank you.
Milica
Thank you for being our very special, loving mommy, for looking after all of us all these years and keeping our family together. May God's choicest blessings be yours as we celebrate your 100th birthday. As Uncle Momo always says, and said: Sto pet i opet, idemo, idemo dalje, a tek smo počeli. Love you mom.
Neja
Dearest Auntie Lucy,
You’re an absolute marvel at 100. We will always treasure the very precious memories of the many beautiful Slavas and birthday celebrations in Houghton. With your infectious laugh, we just loved listening to your stories, particularly of the happy Pyramid Farm days. Your love, kindness, warmth, and care towards us, Jadrijevich’s was boundless. You've touched our lives more than you'll ever know. Thank you for being you. We love you lots. Vas and Neja.
Kiki
Hello, my Nona, my Lucy, my Luca. This is Kiki, one of your favourites. Happy birthday for your milestone. Sorry can't be there in person to celebrate, but I'll definitely be thinking of you all day today. Make sure you blow out all the candles, and just keep on disarming us with your dazzling smile. Lots of kisses and love. Sagapo poli poli poli poli.
Marko
My favorite memory of my Nona was a few years ago, for one of my mom's birthdays, she wanted to make her a strudel, because that's my mom's favorite thing. And like Nona always does, she wanted to give her exactly what she wanted. And she showed me every step, with all the love and care in the world, how to mix the dough, how to knead it, how to stretch it out, how to make the delicious apple filling, and wrap it all up. And it's one of my most treasured memories. I'm so so lucky that I've gotten to spend this much time with my Nona, and I'm infinitely grateful that I got to have the time. I love you so much Nona, and happy birthday very very soon.
Stefan
Happy 100th birthday, Nona! Your strength, love, and stories are treasured to our whole family. Wishing you a glorious day and many more. I can't wait to see you. Love, Stefan.
Nataša
My favourite memory of Nona definitely goes back to our best times we had in Plett. A couple of years ago, we're talking easily 15 to 20 years ago, we were on holiday in Plettenberg Bay around December time, and Nona had fetched us from Robberg Beach, which was myself and all of the cousins. I could be very wrong, because I was quite young, but I remember Nona fetching us in, I remember it to be a beige Mercedes-Benz, with almost like a cream or burnt orange leather seats, and the back seats of the car were covered, covered, covered, covered in white beach sand, because of how often we'd use that car to and from the beach. Nona collected us all, dropped us back off at our flat, and took us inside, she'd actually made us lunch, I must be honest, I cannot remember what was for lunch, but Nona had her easel set up outside on the balcony, with a massive, I could even call it an A0 canvas, and she had her oil paints, and she was painting the most beautiful view of the lagoon.
James Christie-Smith
Hi, Auntie Lou. Whenever I see you, you always say the following. James, James, Morrison, Morrison, whether be George, Dupree, took great care of his mother, although he was only three. James, James, Morrison, Morrison, said to his mother, said he, don't go down to the end of the town unless you go down with me. I hope you have a wonderful celebration, and hope to see you soon. Lots of love.
Remi
Happy 100th birthday, Nona. I hope you have the best day ever and enjoy your party. Thanks for being the very best great-grandmother. Love, Remy.
Lisa
Happy, happy 100th birthday, Nona. What an extraordinary life you have lived. I feel so grateful to have had the privilege of knowing you for the past 27 years. I think so often about all the hours spent in your kitchen, watching you bake and learning from you. And we are reminded of you every single day in our home through your artworks. Your circle paintings are so beautiful, and they carry your spirit and creativity and make our house feel so warm. You've given so much over your 100 years, your talent, your patience, your wisdom, and so much love, which has left a lasting imprint on us all. I hope you have the most special birthday, surrounded by all the love that you've given to everyone else. All my love.
Clio
Happy birthday, Nona! Wow, 100 years is such an incredible achievement. You truly are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for welcoming me into your beautiful family, and for all your kind words and pieces of wisdom. I will forever cherish them. Sagapo!
Nikola
Nona has told us all before, we get the key of the door because we've never been 21 before. I'm excited to find out what happens after 100. Nona has taught us many, many lessons, not the least of which is, if you can smile or crack a hearty laugh in difficult times, you prove to yourself and to everybody else that there's nothing in this world that can break your spirit. We love you, Nona. For the few cousins with no hair, I can say that your beanies keep us warm in the cold, and to feel your warmth is extremely special, and I love you with all my heart.
Barbara
Happy 100th birthday, Nona, wishing you inner peace, love, and joy as you reach this extraordinary milestone in your life. The story that stays with me from you is the quiet art of giving and the way you taught it without needing many words. In our family, we called it the family pullback, making sure everyone received food before you ever took a plate. What I learned from you is that the belief of generosity creates its own return in life. Thank you for that. Happy birthday again, Nona. Barbara.
Luke Christie-Smith
Hello Auntie Lu, it's Luke Christie-Smith here. I'm just wanting to wish you a very, very happy birthday. Wow, hey, what a milestone, 100 years. You are an absolute inspiration to all of us. I think one of my earliest memories of you was in our Kenilworth house in Cape Town. And I remember every time you came down you always used to spoil me and my sister rotten. I remember you buying us a jungle gym that got used until it fell apart, I think. Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic day and I wish I could be there to celebrate it with you. Unfortunately, I'm across the world in America currently. Anyway, lots of love, love you lots. Bye.
Kira
Nona, it's hard to choose just one memory of you, because what stands out the most isn't a single moment, it's the rhythm of everything you created for us. Sunday lunches, menu B, made with only the finest ingredients, as we all spent time together. Cheese and meat strudel to start, your gorgeous cakes and puddings for dessert, and always sending us home with nougat, quality street, and those collectible books teaching us how to paint. You put love and effort into everything. Tradition and togetherness come from our roots, and they are the reason we are such a close family. Even living far away now, we carry this forward, raising our son with those same traditions, making special meals, bringing people together, and always hosting. For you, family is everything, and every celebration deserves incredible food. Stuart always says when you over-cater and buy us too much, he's a Šakota too. My friends still talk about your baking. I can picture you so clearly adding a dash or a handful of flour, just knowing what to do. You have a natural gift, and always with your red nails and beautiful sparkly clip in your hair. Happy 100th birthday, Nona. Thank you for keeping us together.
Anthony
Hi Luca, this is Anthony and Hetty, wanting to congratulate you on this huge achievement of reaching the 100-year milestone. We say this with enormous respect and admiration, since it's not likely that too many of us will ever achieve this. We both feel very privileged to have known you for a fair part of that time, and also to have been invited to say something on this special occasion. Unfortunately, we cannot be there, with you and your family, for the celebrations. This is due to our doggy responsibilities, since our little fellow can't manage without us being there. Well, Hetty in particular. Hetty is essential for his well-being. However, you can be sure that we will be thinking of you on Sunday the 24th, and that we will raise a glass to you and your further good health. It'll be yet another Živila i sve najbolje, as I had done so many times previously in your house. Looking back on all that that has passed, I immediately think to the many memorable slavas and parties I'd enjoyed at 18 5th Street, all with their excess food treats and good booze flowing. But most of all, I remain eternally grateful to you for the wonderful care you took of Tete Stane and my mother when they were still together, and then the abundant care you later provided for Stane once she had moved in with you at 18 5th. Never to be forgotten was the time you allowed me to stay there in your home, me sleeping in the boys' room. I still sincerely appreciate how you were able to make me feel most welcome then, in that difficult time for me during my mother's last days. All I can further say is that having known you, as well as your entire family, definitely made us a lot happier. Once again, Živila i sve najbolje!
Dejan
They say age is a number, but 100 is truly a masterpiece. You have now graduated from the 1 to 99 club, so you are sadly no longer allowed to play with Legos. Thank you for being the person who first showed me all the music and art there is in life. I am beyond grateful for all the years of support and love you have given me. Beyond the East the sunrise, beyond the West the sea, and from the sunrise to the sea, you're the best that can be. Happy birthday, Nona.
Mary
Hello, my Aunty Lou, it's Mary Fairy here, and I just wanted to say how a birthday was never a birthday until Aunty Lucy phoned. You seem to remember every single one of us on our birthdays, and we waited for that phone call. Thank you, Aunty Lou, for always thinking of us, and my friends always used to call you the fairy godmother because you were always spoiling us so much. We love you, Aunty Lou, and looking forward to celebrating with you. Love you, bye.
Andrea Sher Benatar
Happy birthday to our Queen of Chic, our beloved Auntie Lou. When I think of you, I think of family feasts, I think of strudels and the smell of baking. I think of how you are always immaculately dressed. I think of red nail polish and your wicked laugh and sense of humour. I think of poetry and art. I have so many beautiful memories of you, Auntie Lou. When mummy got sick and needed treatment in Joburg, you opened your home to all of us for months on end. We would arrive from Zimbabwe into a space filled with warmth, love, and unmistakable style. And you did everything you could to distract us from the sadness we were carrying. I didn't fully realise it at the time, but your iconic home planted the seed of my love of design. I've drawn on those memories again and again throughout my interior design career. Your incredible taste and effortless style have inspired not just me, but everyone lucky enough to be around you. You've given us more than memories. You've given us a sense of home, of style and beauty, and of love that stays with us always. Thank you, Auntie Lou, for all that you are to us. Love you so much, Andy.
Leia
Happy 100th birthday, Nona! I feel so lucky to have a great grandmother in my life, one that's 100. It's amazing. Whenever I see your beautiful paintings in the house, I think of you, and my favourite memories are eating your delicious Xristole, and watching you bake marble cakes for us. Enjoy your birthday. Love, Leia.
Claire
Happy birthday, Aunty Lucy. Wow, you are just the most incredible, incredible, incredible woman. When I think of you, I just think of glamorous, funky style, with a big smile on your face, welcoming us into your home. And another thing that I think of is every time I make pancakes, I think of you. Because when we used to holiday in Umhlanga, I used to come down every day to your flat to see if you were making pancakes. And then Ranko, for my 21st birthday, gave me your cookbook with the pancake recipe in it. And I know by heart our family enjoys pancakes probably maybe once a week or once every two weeks. We all love them. And I always say they're healthy because they're full of protein. It's six eggs, three cups of flour, and a litre of milk, and a pinch of salt. And yeah, I just, I love you so much, Aunty Lucy. And you're just part of my whole childhood. And you're just the most incredible woman.
Paul Toich
Hey, Auntie Lucy, it's Paul here. I'd just like to wish you a happy 100th birthday, which is an incredible feat. And even more remarkable, you sharing your 100th birthday in the same month as David Attenborough. Sir David Attenborough. So, two remarkable people. That's super special, and thank you for being such a matriarch in the family and holding it together like glue, and for your amazing memories and reciting of poetry and your recipes. It's just amazing, the knowledge you've passed on. I don't think you've actually met Taylor Rose properly and my little Googie Lou, my two-year-old, but I wish a happy birthday from you. Can you guys just say happy birthday? Happy birthday, Auntie Lucy. We love you lots, and you are such a special human being to us all. Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic day. Sorry we won't be there to celebrate, but you have more than enough people there with you, and lots of love. That's all we can send from our side of the little Eastern Cape corner.
Prej
Happy birthday, Nona. This is Prej. I wanted to wish you all the very, very best on this milestone occasion. It really is a fantastic, fantastic achievement to reach 100. I hope that you are showing us all the way. I remember so fondly me coming to your house as a 12, 13-year-old and jumping over the gap on your roof. I remember all of the Slavas. I remember sharing such beautiful times with you all the way through my life. I'm so grateful that you have been in it, and I wish you nothing but the best. Love you lots.
Milica
To our dear Nona, where do we even start? The fondest memories I have from you are your delicious cakes that you made every Sunday lunch, your milk tart, your famous chiffon cake, and those are some of the memories that I will always have of you. Happy, happy birthday, Nona, from little Mili. Thank you for accepting Paolo into our family and treating him like one of your own grandchildren. One of the phrases that you always used to say when we were so naughty on Sunday lunch was, "Das one children, full nonsense! "Love you, Nona. Ciao, Nona. Tanti auguri. Cento di questi giorni. Un bacio forte. We love you, Nona, and we can't wait to celebrate you. Thank you for being the best Nona we could ever dream of having. Love from Millie, Paolo, and Nicola.

When I think of Auntie Lucy, the one thing I always think about is the twinkle in her eyes. Her smile is infectious, but her eyes that sparkle in that is magic. And the one thing that I always remember her to have learned from her is the way she expresses her love and her generosity through food. I think anybody who's tasted any of her food, whether it's strudel or birthday cake, just knows that the love and generosity she pours into it is the magic sauce, as well as the years of experience. But that's my abiding memory. Happy 100th birthday. Unbelievable. So proud of you. Enjoy.
Shelagh
Dear Aunty Lucy, it's Shelagh here. Just wanting to wish you the best of birthdays in this amazing year that you've reached your 100th year. Just want to thank you for always being so kind to me from the moment we joined this family. We've got a legacy and a lifetime of memories and recipes and parties that you've hosted over the years, and you've ever shown us all, and all my family, is love. I love you and I wish the best for you and thank you Aunty Lucy, to you and your family, and all your loved ones, for everything you do for us and our family. I love you. Thank you.
Luka Toich
Happy birthday, Aunty Lucy. It's Luka, one of the twins. Have a great day, and thank you very much for all your love and generosity that you've shown me through my whole life. And to the Šakota family as a whole, for guiding me through life, teaching how to be — try to be generous to other people, and for pointing me in the meat industry, which somehow, by the grace of God, I've seemed to pay the bills as we've gone along, and it's given me a great life. And thanks again, Aunty Lu, and to all the Šakotas

When I think of my mother's life, the overwhelming impression that I have is of her dedication and selflessness and really hard work. When I was a child, by the time I woke up to go to school, she had already been gone for hours and would come home at dusk carrying boxes of books which were lugged up to her bedroom and then would spend hours burning the midnight oil, catching up on all the paperwork that she hadn't got done during the day. In November, it will be 40 years since I wrote my last exam at university, and my only wish was to try and relieve some of that burden from my mother, and I drove over to Evans, where we began to work together. For the next 16 years, every day we drove to and from work together. Most of that time was going to Rurupuit, a 45-minute drive in either direction. These were such happy times where we shared our love for poetry, for literature, for family. We listened to audiobooks of all the Russian greats, the brothers Karamazov, War and Peace. We discussed all the things that were going on in our lives, she helped me with parenting issues that I was having.
Youla
Dear Luca, happy birthday, darling. Hope you have a super day with your kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Have a lovely day, and it's really been a pleasure being part of your family and having met you. All the best. Xronia Pola! Lots of love. Bye.
Jaksa
Dearest Lucy, wishing you a very happy 100th birthday, and thank you for always being part of our lives. With lots of love, Jakša, Ursula, and family. My fondest memory of you is when you came to look after us, and I, as a little boy, shared a room with you. I remember when you received a letter from your admirer, and you used to put it under your pillow so that you could have sweet dreams. You are always my special Lucy. Zlato moje. I love you lots. Jakša.
Carla 🤍
Auntie Lucy, happiest of birthdays to a phenomenal woman who has just been such an integral part of so many people's lives. You certainly have ignited the love for poetry, and I thought that it would be fitting to read an extract from a wonderful man, John O'Donohue, about your birthday, so here goes. Blessed be the mind that dreamed the day the blueprint of your life would begin to glow on earth, illuminating all the faces and voices that would arrive to invite your soul to growth. Blessed be those who have loved you into becoming who you were meant to be. Blessed be those who have crossed your life with dark gifts of hurt and loss that have helped to school your mind in the art of disappointment. When desolation surrounded you, blessed be those who looked for you and found you, their kind hands urgent to open a blue window in the grey wall formed around you. On this echoing day of your birth, may you open the gift of solitude in order to receive your soul. Enter the generosity of silence to hear your hidden heart. Know the serenity of stillness to be enfolded in you by the miracle of your being. May you be blessed with many more wonderful moments and just know that you are deeply loved by so many and I wish you a happy, happy birthday, dear Auntie Lucy. Much love from Carla and family, Mark, Stephen, Kiara, Joshua and Greg. Love you so, so much.
Lisa
My darling Auntie Lucy, it has taken me a while to record this message because it was so hard to choose from all the memories and the wonderful things you have done for me and for all of us. You were such a big influence and such a steadfast support as I was growing up and through the hard times and the happy ones alike. I am so grateful for every moment that I got to spend with you and for everything I got to learn from you. When I think of you so many things come rushing to mind. Your warm hugs, your beautiful poetry, your vibrant and glorious art and your cooking. Oh my goodness, your cooking. Your big warm and welcoming family and your home where we were always, we always knew we belonged. But if I had to name one, the one thing that rises above all the rest, it's the relationship that you had with my Nona. Seeing the two of you together was pure magic. The way you loved and doted on each other, the way you teased each other and hugged each other and yes, even when you got mad at each other, it was always, always wrapped in so much love. It was a genuine inspiration. You two showed me more than anyone what love truly looks like. Auntie Lu, happy 100th birthday. You are a true legend and a matriarch and you are deeply loved by us all. And I will always remember, "Dus one Children, full nonsense! " Love you.
Johnny Stip
Dear Aunty Lu, The celebration of your 100th birthday is a landmark in all our lives, the first ever in our family. Bravo! You have been an incredibly special person to all of us throughout our lives, and your love and generosity knows no bounds. I have lovely memories of happy holidays with you in Houghton, where your home was always a welcome and interesting place full of life, laughter, and delightful food. I also fondly remember the mountain of chocolates that you once gave me. And to hear all the stories about the good old Daspoort days, and of our dear Ma and your sister Franka, has been special. And likewise, all your wonderful poetry recitals. You haven't lost a thing. What a full and rich life you have had so far. Your unrelenting love for your family really stands out, and we are immensely proud to call you our aunt. To sum it all up in your dear mother's words, you have always been the sweetie girl, first in class, and best in Africa. Just the best. Little wonder that we named two of our daughters after the most famous great aunt, Lucy and Ella. Wishing you the happiest day on the 24th of May, 100 not out, Jivjeli! tons of love, Johnny, Tessa, and the girls.
Petar
Maria, Petar, s ljubavlju.
Skye
Happy birthday, Lucy. Wishing you the best day and the happiest year ahead. 100 — wow, what a milestone. I will always remember coming to South Africa for the first time to meet you and the whole family. And you were so kind and warm and welcoming with a gorgeous presence. And you told me if I was to marry my Greek man, Andreas, I'd have to learn how to say I love you in Greek, which I now know how to say thanks to you. So wishing you a very happy day with your family and friends all around, and hope to see you soon with your newest great-grandbaby. Lots of love.
Maureen
Dearest Lucy, we have shared such wonderful memories over the years, from our young days clubbing at Ciros, to the countless family get-togethers, filled with stories, laughter, and good times along the way. I treasure the fact that we still speak almost every day. And of course, our shared love of tennis has always connected us, even though I fancied Federer, you stood firmly behind Djokovic. Nic absolutely adored you. He spoke of you with so much love and admiration. I know he would have been proud to celebrate this incredible milestone with you. Thank you for being a truly wonderful sister-in-law. You have always been an inspiration to me. I wish you a beautiful celebration filled with love. God bless. Maureen.
Lara
Happy birthday, Auntie Lucy. You've got the most beautiful smile, the biggest heart, and you cook the most delicious food. Thank you for being so special and always, always so loving. Thank you for being you, and I'm wishing you and all of us are wishing you a happy, happy, happy 100th birthday. So honoured to be there able to share it with you. Happy birthday and lots and lots of love.
Rosemary
Hello, Auntie Lucy. Gee whiz, what a special birthday, 100 years old. You've been a queen, I'm sure, in your past life, you've been a queen in this life, and I'm sure you're going to be a queen wherever you're off to one day. But you know, it's an achievement to get to 100, and I just always admire your lovely poetry that you're able to recite so easily, and you are such a dignified lady, and you are definitely a queen, and you're a queen for today and always. We will enjoy seeing you and celebrating with you. Congratulations on reaching such a huge milestone. Lots of love from Rosemary and Gordon. We'll see you, and have a lovely day with all your family. Okay, love you, bye-bye.
Gabi Christie-Smith
Dear Aunty Lucy, happy 100th birthday. What an extraordinary milestone, and what a life so beautifully lived. When I think of you, I think of gifts, and not only the presents you so generously spoil everyone with. I think of the gift of your poetry, which has moved and inspired so many, and the gift of your cooking, which has brought such warmth and joy to every table. I will never forget visiting you in Joburg for tea, and somehow, in the middle of it all, you found the time to teach me how to make cheese strudel. That is so perfectly you, generous with your time, your knowledge, and your love all at once. You have been blessed with so many talents, and the most special thing about you is how freely and joyfully you share them with everyone lucky enough to be in your life. I hope you have the most wonderful celebration. Sending you so much love, Gabby.
Alys
The first time I met Lucy was at Saheti when her grandsons were really small and they were doing karate and we were standing there chatting and she said to me, you know, I used to be a speech and drama teacher and I was just so impressed by the subtle dynamite of a woman who spoke so beautifully and was so charming. And she hasn't changed, she just is as special now as she was then and I feel so privileged to have known her and I know that if my boys were here they would be giving lots of love and hugs and kisses because they remember her with such fondness. Happy, happy birthday, Nona. Very, very special to have you with us in this world. All our love.
Eileen
Hello Aunty Lou, it's Eileen here. I just want to wish you a very, very happy 100th birthday. What an amazing person you are, and to have reached this age. You've achieved so much, and are such a wonderful example to us. Thank you for all your love, kindness, warmth, and generosity. What stands out for me is how you always love to reminisce about my cousin Celeste Harrington and Uncle Eric Rudolph, about the good old days in Pretoria and the flower shop, and then of course Uncle Peter, your brother, who was at school with Uncle Eric in the same class. So it's very comforting and heartwarming for me, knowing that we've been connected from so far back. I love you Aunty Lou, and I value the time that I've been able to spend with you. God bless you, love you always, and have a wonderful celebration. Bye.
Annabel
Dear Lucy, it's Annabelle and Jamie here from Los Angeles, and we send 100 best wishes for your 100th birthday. We just loved meeting you at Dre and Skye's engagement party in Johannesburg. It was truly a beautiful sight to see you surrounded by all your family and see how loved and admired you are by all generations. What an inspiration to all. Happy, happy birthday! With much love, Annabelle and Jamie.

Ivo
Dear Teta Luca, happy 100th birthday. I wish you health, peace, joy, and many beautiful moments surrounded by the people who love you. I am very sorry that I cannot be there with you today. I will always remember your love of poetry and cooking, the way you patiently corrected my English, and above all, energy, elegance, strength, and devotion to family, as well as the friendship and loyalty you showed to my father Serjan. During important moments in my life, quietly and without ever asking for anything in return, you became someone I could always rely on. Thank you for everything you have given me, especially your kindness, generosity, and support when I needed them most. With love and respect, Ivo.
Olga
Dearest Luka, you are amazing, still looking so good and full of life. Your family is blessed to still have you around, to share in your fountain of knowledge. Happy 100th birthday!

How much we have loved you, how much you mean to each and every one of Nicola and my family, and the whole family of which you are the head, the grand matriarch, a unique and precious human being. You know and care for everyone, young and old. You shower all with your love. You are such an example of so many things, and your legacy of love for future generations will live forever. Thank you for all your love. We will never forget you.

You have always been so sincere, warm, and genuinely happy when you saw us, and those are the qualities that I and my family will always remember and cherish. We are so sorry that we cannot be there to celebrate with you, but we hope you have a beautiful day and you are surrounded by family, laughter, and all the people who love you so, so much. Happy birthday, Auntie Lucy. We love you. From Joe, Christelda, and Jackson Toich.
Monique
Hi Auntie Lucy, we know you love poetry, so here's a poem for you. One hundred years, what a beautiful day, to celebrate your love in every way. From Monique, Graham, Frank and Summer too, with all our hearts we're sending love to you. You've always been so gentle, warm and kind, with a caring heart so rare to find. You make each person feel so loved and true, with kind words and warmth in all you do. One memory I'll always hold dear, is reading Christopher Robin poetry with you so near. And oh, the wonderful cakes and pastries you make, so much love tucked into each treat you bake. We've always loved your stories from long ago, the memories and moments only you can show. You brought the past so beautifully alive, with wisdom and warmth that continues to thrive. Thank you for being the wonderful aunt you are, a beautiful presence in our lives near and far. We hope your celebration is filled with love today, surrounded by all who cherish you in every way. And somewhere above with love shining through, I know my dad is celebrating with you too.
Brigette
To our dearest Auntie Lucy on your 100th birthday, what a blessing it is to celebrate 100 beautiful years of your life. We honour not only your years, but the love, kindness, warmth, and generosity you have shared with everyone around you. You always spoilt us so much. I have special memories of our holidays together in Umslanga, and especially of the delicious bean soup you and Uncle Ranko used to make. It was my dad's favourite. The pastries you lovingly baked, and you always made sure we had plenty to take home with us. You also filled our lives with beauty through your art and poetry, sharing your creativity in ways that inspired us all. Thank you for every hug, every encouraging word, every delicious treat, and of course all the many stories of the old days, which we always loved to hear, and even now, you still have many to tell. Your love has been a masterpiece of compassion, strength, and devotion to family. You are deeply treasured and forever admired. We all love you too much. You are simply the best. Love, Brigette, Gerald, Adrian, and Nicole.
Donna Toich
Great, wonderful, great Aunty Lucy. You are an exquisite lotus flower that rose from the humble Daspoort beginnings. You have been a colourful sparkle in our Toich family for a century. You are the Queen and we celebrate you. Your style, sophistication, laugh, art, poetry, and most of all your love and generosity have touched us all. I remember our December holidays together at Marine Terraces in Umslanga and your extravagant Christmas gifts, like the clothes from Mod Squad at Brixton Centre. At that stage of my life it was the pinnacle of presents. You always look like a stylish fashion icon with perfectly manicured nails. Your laugh, stories, love of my dad Jose, and infinite kindness have made a difference in my life. I appreciate and am proud to be related to you. I've loved you for 52 years and always will. And please let me not forget your art. Your creativity oozes out of you. Your originality, passion, and colour bring joy not only to people, but the rooms they hang in. And last, but not least, your food. Your kilometres of strudels, Dobosch tort, palačinke, fruitcake, and shortcake to name a few. The recipes of family heirlooms. I love you, great-great Auntie Lucy. Love always, Donna Toich.
Mima B
Dear Luća, we today celebrating your 100 years, lovely and young lady for that age, always full of smile, full of attention, full of talking beautiful words and welcoming everybody to your home, and I am the one of them with my children where I came many times to your place, you always were smiling, laughing, joking. You are unbelievable person and one of the very, very rare probably who will be living that long, loved always by dear God, and in that all what we had together, we — I remember one thing, whenever you saw me, you said, Mima, we were — do you remember? We were married, both of us, for the two lovely men called Ranko, and then I was very happy to hear that and say, yes, and we will remember that, and we will be honored by God that we were married to the two men like that. I wish you another hundred, probably is impossible, but with God everything is possible. We love you, we will always think about you, have a beautiful day, and with all people who came to visit you. Love you, with my family, goodbye, see you on Sunday, bye.
Marina
Dearest Auntie Luća, I really want to wish you an amazing and unforgettable 100th birthday. You are such a kind, warm, generous, and phenomenal person. You amaze me how you know every single person. You just look at someone's face and you can say the name, the surname, a memory you have with that person. Your darling family is always so welcoming to us. You always host us with such generosity, and thank you for always including us in all of these special occasions. You are a stalwart of the community, and you are a pride to your darling family. Really, you're just a phenomenon of nature. God bless you, and wishing you many, many happy and healthy years to come with your wonderful, wonderful children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. See you soon, and lots and lots of love, Marina and Jose.

Antoinette
Dear Lucy, wow, what an achievement. Congratulations to a gracious and beautiful lady on reaching a century. With love, best wishes, and God's blessings for health and happiness on your way forward. From Antoinette, Ante's daughter, and Ken.
Adele
Hello, Lucy. I always think of you as looking like Eva Peron, with your very beautiful chignon and your beautiful clothes, and that's always how I used to think of you. When I was describing you to anybody, I always said, just think of Eva Peron, and that's how I think of you, as Eva Peron.
Zoja
Dear Auntie Luća, what a beautiful thing it is to celebrate your 100 years of being alive. It's a century filled with your presence, and your laughter, and elegance, and family, and your poetry, and of course your magical spirits. I still remember a photograph in Houghton of you in your wedding dress, wearing a tiara. Every time I visited, I would stop and gaze for it for a long while. It was the most beautiful picture to me — glamorous, and graceful, and just completely timeless. As a little girl, I used to dream about raiding your wardrobe. I remember your beautiful dresses, and your red nails, and your perfectly groomed hair in a bun, and of course the warmth which you shared with everybody you encountered. And of course we can't forget your beautiful and special ability to recite poetry as if words lived literally inside of your bones, something I have never experienced or witnessed in anyone else through my travels. And just what a gift, 100 years later you remain the glowing heart of an enormous family that absolutely adores you. What a testament to who you are, that is. When I think of you, it's always in my mind's eye in a family portrait photograph, and there you are right in the center, surrounded by children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and just generations of love. And to me that has got to be one of the most beautiful things imaginable. I am so lucky to have lived in a lifetime touched by your presence. Happy birthday, Auntie Luca, all my love.
Margi
Hi, Aunty Lucy. First of all, I want to say from Chris and I, a very, very happy birthday on this special milestone birthday of yours. The incident that I want to mention was one day when we were in East London, at Luka and Sheila's house. I was sitting with you and Milica and Savo, we were having dinner there, and one of the things you did, which I thought was so amazing, was you looked up at nothing in particular, and you said, I really loved my husband very much. And that was something so special.
Carla Bartkunsky
To my darling Auntie Lu, wishing you the most beautiful 100th birthday. I'm so sad I'm not going to be there on the day, but I will see you very, very soon with my little babies. I can't wait for you to meet Miles. I will treasure all the hours of poetry and all the times I've spent with you, and learning about balancing life and work, play and work, because that I saw you work very hard when I was a little kid. I will never forget that, and you always played hard. Biggest parties, there was always a balance. And I love you very, very much, and I can't wait to give you the biggest hug, and I hope you have the most special, special day. I love you my Auntie Lu. Miss you.
Angelo
Dear Auntie Lu, I've got so many lovely memories that I don't even know where to start, but some that stand out are your elocution lessons when I was about five or six years old in Daspoort, and you teaching me John had great big waterproof boots on. John had a great big waterproof hat. Another memory that stands out is your visits to England when I was working there, and you went down to Shakespeare Country and Hathaway's Cottage and Shakespeare's Birthplace, and how chuffed you were to be visiting there. Also beautiful memories of sitting in your lounge and listening to you reciting verses and verses of the classical English poets, and then trying to remember the lines of the only poem that I could remember, I wandered lonely as a cloud. Auntie Lu, my overriding memories of you are of your loving and giving nature, your unlimited love and generosity, not just of gifts but of your time and your love. I shall cherish these memories forever. Can't wait to see you on Sunday and celebrate. Lots of love.
Jane
Auntie Lucy, I shall never forget your kindness to me when Angelo had his first bypass, all those years ago. You came with me to the hospital every evening, would spend a few minutes with Angelo, and then wait in the visitors' room. There you entertained, comforted, and were so well received by all, including the nurses. For all you've done for our family for many years, I say a very big thank you. You epitomise that saying, ever mindful of the needs of others. Lots of love from us all, and can't wait to see you on Sunday. Bye!
Sasha Fabris
With eyes that could sink a thousand ships, she looked into my head and told me, with great talent comes great responsibility. It stuck with me forever.
Christine
Happy 100th birthday, Aunty Lucy. What an incredible milestone. We're thinking of you lots today and wish we were there. Aunty Lucy, whenever I get my nails done, I only choose red paint, and it always makes me think of you with your beautiful red nails. And to me, you're the epitome of elegance and a beautiful mind, and we always so enjoy listening to your stories and your poetry. We love you lots, and we are sending loads of love from us, from Rob, Oli, Sasha, and myself.
Stuart
Happy birthday, Nona. Reaching 100 years is a truly incredible milestone. One of my strongest memories of you is always telling me to slow down, as I tend to walk rather quickly. You always said to me, you're rushing everywhere, you're running around, you need to slow down and walk. And even today when I find myself rushing around doing something, I think of you saying that. Happy birthday, lots of love, Stuart.
Taskia
Happy 100th birthday, Nona. What an incredible milestone to celebrate. 100 wonderful years of memories, love, wisdom, and kindness. Daniela

May your special day be filled with the same joy and love that you've given so freely to others throughout your life. With all our love and real admiration for you. From Daniela, Gavin, Oliver, Francesca, and Stella on the East Coast of Australia.
Nada
Happy 100th birthday, Teta Luci. I often think of you reciting those beautiful words. Remember me when I'm gone away, gone far away into the silent land. When you can no more hold me by the hand, nor I half turn to go, yet turn instead. Hearing you say that at 99 and a half is something I will never forget. It reflected your grace, your strength, and your beautiful spirit. But today, we are not remembering you in absence. We are celebrating you, your extraordinary life, and the joy you bring to all of us. You are truly one of a kind and such an inspiration to me. I have always admired you, not only as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend, but as someone whose kindness touches everyone around you. One of my favorite memories will always be our shared love of tennis. I will never forget those calls. Darling, I know you are at work, but the match is about to start. Novak is warming up. We loved those moments so much, and my colleagues adored you for them too. I will always treasure the thoughtful things you did for me, like the knitted cap and birthday cake you made with so much love. And I also love the story of you and your beloved husband helping a stranger on your honeymoon, simply because someone was hungry and needed kindness. That story says so much about who you are. That teta Luci, your warmth, generosity, humour, and love for life shine so brightly. Happy 100th birthday! What a privilege it is to know you and to celebrate you today.
Tanya
Happy birthday, Aunty Luca, You were there when my dad proposed to my mom, handing her an engagement ring in a paper bag, after stopping at every bar on the way for courage. You were there for us when times were good, and you were there when times were bad, and not many people hang around for the bad times. I have such happy memories of music, and dancing, and accordions, and singing, and piano, and love, from you and your beautiful family, and I cherish every one of them. When I visited you for your 99th last year, I felt a bit overwhelmed with nostalgia, and happiness, and just so many, many memories. You are an extraordinary human who is so loved, and may God continue to bless you and keep you safe. I'm sorry we couldn't make it for the party. Ilya is writing exams, but we will see you for Slava in January. Sending so much of the love, and kisses, and hugs from me, Ilya, Dominique, Julio, and Joshua. I think Joshua will also send his own message. Big kisses. Have the best time.

Hi Aunty Lucy, it's Sarah here. When I think of you, I think of family. A woman, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a Nona, a great Nona, a great great Nona, an Aunty, a great Aunty, and great great Aunty Lucy. All the roles you've played so gracefully and hats you've worn so creatively. Thank you for being so kind always and teaching me the value of family. It's an absolute honour to know you and I celebrate your happy happy 100th birthday. Bye!
Sarah
We love you very much and so wish we were there to celebrate with you in person, but I know it will be a spectacular event filled with so many loved ones. All our love, Bru, Sarah, Olivia, Rachel, and Stella in the Netherlands.
Rosa
Hello Auntie Lucy, Roza here, Pietertjie’s daughter. When I think of you turning 100, I'm not surprised. If anyone was to do it, it would be you. May you have an incredible birthday celebration. I'm so sorry that Sean, the boys, and I won't be able to make it. My memories of you from a little girl till now are your beautiful smile, sparkly eyes, and a matriarch who holds such poise, stoic, a keen sense of fashion and style, always glamorous, kind-hearted and incredibly generous. Your love for your family filled the room, sometimes with the scent of apple strudel. Loads of love to you and the greater Ŝakota family. Our hearts are with you on this incredibly, incredibly special day. Love from the Oaks family.
Nikita
Your kindness, your wisdom, and your love for family have been such a guiding light in all of our lives. I feel incredibly fortunate to have learned from you and to have experienced your love so personally. To a century well-lived and deeply loved, may the warmth you've given the world return to you a hundredfold. Happy hundredth birthday, Luce and thank you for everything you are. All my love, always. Niko.
Margie
Happy 100th birthday, dear Lucy. You are a beloved matriarch to all your family, and an icon to all who meet you. Congratulations on reaching your centenary with such grace and fortitude. I knew how special you were before meeting you, as Alt often spoke so lovingly of his amazing Nona, and of course your delicious apple strudel. Best wishes for a memorable birthday celebration, filled with joy and surrounded by all who love you. This comes with much love from Margie, Amy's mom.
Ranko
One of my favorite memories with Nona was going to watch Wimbledon with her and my mom and dad when I was nine years old. And that was a very special experience for me, and especially to have shared it with Nona. And it's something I could never, ever forget. Happy birthday, Nona. Love you lots. And this is an incredible milestone you've reached, and there's many more to come. Love you.
Sanya
Dear Auntie Lucy, wishing you God's richest blessings on your 100th birthday. You are an amazing lady. You've always told wonderful stories and put smiles on all our faces. Auntie Lucy, my fondest memory of you is coming to buy your dried fruit for your cakes, your amazing fruitcake that you always made. God bless you always, Auntie Lucy. Lots of love, Sanyal Nezetich. Thank you. you you
Alexi V
Auntie Lucy, happy, happy 100th birthday. I cannot believe this milestone that you've reached. It's quite remarkable. But you are quite remarkable. And I think the memory that I've got of you that I'll never forget is actually from a photograph of you. I think it was at my parents' wedding or something. And it's just — I've probably only seen this photograph a handful of times. But it's your smile in that photograph that I'll never forget. So, Auntie Lucy, I just want to let you know what a huge piece of our family you are. We cherish you, and I wish you all the best, and can't wait to see you on Sunday.
Rozanna
Dear Aunty Lucy, many happy returns on your 100th birthday. It's been so wonderful to hear how you and my dad, Joe Stip, shared such adventures as children. No one else could tell me those stories, so I truly, truly appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing you. God bless.
Emily Kark
Happy 100th birthday, our dear Aunty Lucy. I love and adore you more than you know. You've meant so much to me, and watching you through life and learning from you has been a true honour. You really do define the words elegance, grace, and culture. One of my earliest memories of you and a moment I knew I had to know who you were, because you were just a great aunt, was when you travelled, I think, to Switzerland, or at least somewhere in Europe. I just remember that you came back, and you had a swatch watch for each of the eight children in the Toich Twins household. And I just thought that was the most generous, kind thing, and thoughtful, too. I mean, to think of all of us as your great nieces and nephews while you were on holiday, discovering the world, was just out of this world. I love you so much, and I can't wait to celebrate with you on Sunday.
Nadja
Dear Auntie Lucy, this is Nadja Nikola and Monica’s oldest daughter. I wanted to leave a message for you to celebrate your birthday with you. We have listened to some of your messages that everybody's been sending, and we can just hear how much love, how much inspiration, how much admiration we all have with you. We celebrate you with all the Toic family, and the Sakota family, and all your friends. And we just want to leave a love note with you. We will be there on Sunday to see you, and celebrate with you, and have a glass of champagne to your full century of living and loving. We wanted to say that we will be celebrating you and all the lives you've touched, all the memories, and the laughter, and the love that we've shared, and celebrating the hundred years of wonderful years of you, Auntie Lucy. We love you, and we will be there to celebrate with you on Sunday. Love, Nadja Greg, Daniela, Luke, Michael and John. Sending big kisses.
Dusanka
Good morning from Cape Town, it's Dusanka Stojaković. I would have loved to have been with you on Sunday, as I had planned to come across. Unfortunately, work has intervened, so that's that. I think back over the years of when you were either at the church or at the dom, always terribly elegantly dressed, and your hair always perfectly coiffured. It's extraordinary that I know someone who has got to 100. The strength that you must have is extraordinary, extraordinary. Wishing you much love and a beautiful day, and I only wish I could have been there. Bye.
Cansin
Dear Nona, I was the very first one to call you that actually. My heart is so full when I remember all the special times we've shared throughout my life, like baking strudel together or painting together in Plett, or watching tennis on Sundays, and so many other special moments. Whenever I'm at home in my kitchen, a little trick you taught me makes me think of you, or when I walk down my stairs at home, seeing your painting hanging on the wall really lights up my day. And especially when it gets cold and I pull on one of the beanies that you knitted for me, I really feel your love. But most special are my kokulas, even now at 99, when I sit with you, those loving backrubs, only you can give me the world to me. Nona, thank you for filling our lives with so much love. You are the true heart of our family. I love you very, very, very, very much. Happy 100th birthday.
Nadia Stip
Hello to the most precious and beloved centenarian in the whole wide universe, our Aunty Lou. It's Nadia Stip here in Utah, USA. I wish we could be there with you in person to give you a massive hug and celebrate this unfathomable milestone. Aunty Lou, one of my favourite memories of you, and something that shows the beauty of your soul, is how you phoned our Nona, Franka every single day of her life. If we happened to be at her house at the time, the phone would ring in the hallway, her face would completely light up, and she'd declare, that's my sister, before running through to eagerly answer it. Thank you for showing our Nona such constant support of love, and for loving all of us so deeply, and actually making each one of us feel seen and special. We are incredibly blessed to have you in our lives, and we treasure you. Happy 100th birthday, Aunty Lou, our sparkly queen. We love you so, so much.
Chennay
Happy, happy 100th birthday, Lucy. Thank you for being the best mother-in-law anybody could ever wish for. Thank you for the best cheese strudel and meat strudel, best in the world. Love you forever, Chennay
Amy
Dearest Nona, it's such a privilege to be able to celebrate 100 years of you, a whole century of life, love, and memories, and what a life it has been. I remember the first day I met you, as clear as day. I walked into the lounge at Marikana, feeling a little intimidated to meet Alt's grandmother who he had spoken so highly of. I remember being met by a beautifully put-together woman, with lipstick on, red nails, and without a hair out of place, yet you immediately made me feel at home. Nona, I have loved our time together, sitting, often with the Fernet in hand, listening to your stories. The people you've met, the things you've seen, the life you've lived — it's like stepping into history. And then, of course, there's Alti. From the very beginning, you took every opportunity to tell me how Alti always took such good care of you, and that he was yours. I'll forever be grateful that you eventually agreed to share him with me, 50-50. Watching that love now extend to our son, Christopher, has been something so special. The way you light up around him, the way he lights up around you, is something we don't take for granted. And hearing you recite the Christopher Robin poem to him, word for word, with such expression and animation, is pure magic. Nona, reaching 100 is an extraordinary milestone. We are so grateful for your love, and your stories, and your spirit, and the warmth that you bring into every room. Happy 100th birthday, Nona. We love you so much.

Claudia
Happy birthday, Nona, the chicest 100-year-old. I remember visiting over the years, listening to your sage advice and wisdom on all things life and family. Your stories of travel and in knowing exactly who you are and what you wanted from life inspired me and has marked the way I walk through relationships. As a bright-eyed 21-year-old, you urged me not to let the small things bother me and to throw anything that didn't serve me out the window. I admire your keen eye for creativity and your strong sense of self. I can't wait to give you a big hug and a kiss on Sunday, wishing you all the love and happiness. Love, Claudia.
Dominique
Dear Auntie Lucy, you are such a legend. This is Dominique, Mark, Luke and Leila from Australia wishing you the happiest day celebrating your milestone birthday. Thank you for all the memories you created with the Bojic family. Your kindness, generosity and friendship was always appreciated. And we wish Jerry and Ida were there to celebrate this day with you and your amazing family. Sending all our love. Happy Birthday!
Isabella
Nona, reaching 100 years old is an extraordinary milestone, but even more remarkable is the legacy you've created, a family of children and grandchildren who carry forward your example of love, care, respect, and devotion to family. I salute you and love you.
Douglas Smith
Hi Nona, it's Douglas, Natasha's husband. I just wanted to send a message to say a very happy birthday. I hope you have an amazing day, and I wanted to share a memory that I hold close to me that we shared together. The night that, or the just after Natasha and I got engaged, we came to share the exciting news with you, and when sharing the news with you, you gave us both the most profound advice, and you pulled us close, and you said to us both that if we listen to one another, and we care for one another, that we'll live happy and long lives. And that message really stuck with me ever since then, and I'm so grateful that we got to share that moment with you. So happy birthday to many more happy, healthy years. Love you lots, from Douglas and Natasha.
Shamim
Happy birthday, dear Mrs Sakota. I know you love poetry, so this poem is dedicated to you. One hundred years, a life so rare, of strength and grace beyond compare. A steadfast heart, so wise and true, with a quiet courage shining through. Your love for family, deep and bright, has been their anchor, warmth and light. Through every season, near and far, you've guided them just as you are. To hear once more the voices dear, the laughter of those held so near, has been an honour to restore, an open, sound, sweet door once more. Today we celebrate your story, a life of resilience, love and glory. Happy hundredth birthday, dear Mrs Sakota, with heartful wishes Shamim and team. With gratitude to Dr. Davor Vidjak for the referral. It has been a true privilege to help you hear again.
Jess
Happy 100th birthday to my beautiful Nona, a woman of grace, wisdom, culture, and immeasurable strength. Your life has been a masterpiece painted with love, poetry, and the beautiful legacy of matriarchal spirit. I will always remember checking if my hands were clean before having tea with the Queen, and the gentle reminders you gave me to always stay true to myself and remain strong no matter what life brings. I will forever cherish the way your face lit up every time I walked into the room, and the endless laughs we shared over cheeky conversations. Through every story shared, every canvas touched, and every life you nurtured, you inspired generations. Thank you for your love, your wisdom, your warmth, and for shaping so much of who we are today. Celebrating 100 years of you is celebrating a century of beauty, resilience, and extraordinary love. Celebrating 100 years of you is celebrating a century of beauty, resilience, and extraordinary love.
Julia
Hi Aunty Lucy, it's Julia here with her husband Chris. I'm Anton's daughter and I'm here with our kids, Max and Vida. We just want to say happy birthday and hope you have the most amazing day. So sorry we can't be there to celebrate with you, but I know you're surrounded by all the people that love you the most and that you love the most, and you guys are going to have the most special day. We always have the best memories of celebrating with the Sakotas and we're just, yeah, very sad we can't be there, but we just wanted to say happy birthday and have the most incredible day and we're sending so much love from East London. Happy birthday Aunty Lucy, I hope you have a wonderful day. Okay, sending lots of love, bye.
Seka
Hello everybody, we miss you so much. To the amazing woman we celebrate today, Luća. Happy birthday, Luca She is the modern-day Audrey Hepburn. She even looks like her, don't you think? But of course she is more exceptional. Wait a minute, if Audrey Hepburn was still alive today, Luća would be four years older. That's just crazy. We admire you because you have always given the one thing to everyone that no one will ever have enough of, and that's time. You always have had time for a chat, a poem recital, to record, a fond memory, or even to sing a song or offer some life advice. My fondest memory with you is the one thing that has always stuck with me, and that's your love of watching tennis. In particular, your love of Nole. Nole you are the goat mate, and always will be. Keep at it, Luca, because no one does life like you do. This memory is from Seka, Ronald, Daniela and James, with all our love from Australia. We're sorry that we couldn't be there to celebrate this special day with you. We will raise our glasses and think of you on Sunday. And once again, happy birthday, Luca Thank you.
Elle
Hello, my darling Auntie Lu. Happy, happy 100th birthday. I'm on the way to the airport to come and celebrate with you. I'm so excited to be with you today. You've been such an important part of my life, of our family's life. I have such beautiful memories of incredible Slavas, and just feeling so overwhelmed by love from your family, and just being part of this massive, extensive village that just always made me feel like home, and made me so happy. And I just wanted to say that you are so valued, you are so treasured, you are the anchor of so much of our family, and we love you always. Happy birthday, Auntie Lu. I'll see you soon.
Suzette
Dearest Aunty Lucy, happy birthday. What an extraordinary milestone and what an extraordinary woman you are. Your beautiful eyes, your warmth, and your grace make everybody that you meet feel loved and welcomed and seen. It is really so, so great to spend this day with you and to celebrate with you. May your birthday be filled with love, laughter, and precious memories of all the people who cherish you and love you dearly. Much love.
Seb
Auntie Lucy, Nona, we are so excited to be celebrating your 100th birthday. Our kids have been bragging to all of their friends leading up to this that our great aunt is turning 100 years old, and rightfully none of the kids can believe it. Our friends as well, everyone says, oh my goodness, what incredible genetics. So we're giving ourselves a little pat on the back. I'm giving myself a pat on the back that I've come from the same gene pool as you. But jokes aside, we can't wait to celebrate you. You're an incredible person. A standout moment for me, amongst many, is when you first met my wife. We were at the airport in East London for one of the cousins' weddings, and we were waiting for a lift. And while we waited there, you were one of the first people that really made my wife Maria feel like part of the family. You're so kind and making jokes with her, and it's something she speaks about all the time. And it's a very fond memory that I have. So yeah, we can't wait to celebrate you, your warmth, your kindness, your skill, your creativity. You're an incredible painter, incredible mind. And like I said, just proud to be part of your gene pool, to be honest, and cannot wait to celebrate you, Auntie Lucy. Lots of love from me and my family.
Mirjana
Dearest Auntie Lucy, congratulations on reaching this milestone birthday of 100. We are so happy and delighted that you are going to be celebrating with all your friends and family. We're really sorry we can't be there, but we will be thinking of you all day. You've always been the kindest, most generous, elegant, caring, wonderful lady, and we hold you very dear. We're wishing you love and happiness, surrounded by all of those that love you. Sending you lots of love from Mirjana, Neil, Daniel, and Marko.
Ilija
Draga Luća, sretan rođendan, želimo vam još mnogo lijeta. Your life has been a gift to us all. Your 100 years serve as an inspiration. Thank you for the memories, thank you for the stories, and thank you for the love you gave me. With love always, Ilija, Teja, Tesla and Maksim.
Louis
Happy birthday, Lucy. It's Louis and Isabel. We want to wish you the most wonderful day on this spectacular milestone. Whenever we think of you, your famous motto always comes to mind. Sharing is caring. You have spent a century showing exactly what everyone, what true generosity and hospitality look like. Your annual family parties are legendary to us, and we always cherish the amazing food and drinks and those brilliant animated stories you share. My mother Ljuba loved you dearly, and I know she's smiling down and celebrating this incredible day with you in spirit. Thank you for your beautiful perseverance and for always making room for everyone in your life. We love you, and we hope your special day is as generous and as wonderful as you are. Thank you, Lucy. Bye.
Radojka
I want you spend this anniversary surrounded by love, respect, and people who love you. Happy 100th birthday. May peace and joy continue in your life.
Ezette
My darling Lucy, I'm so privileged that today I'm going to be coming to your house to celebrate you on your 100th birthday. You are an incredible human being and I love you lots. Lots of love. Ezette

Nona, I always remember how you used to call me the tea boy, which is true because I drank copious amounts of tea. However, I remember walking in and you had made cakes with every possible sweetener because you knew I was diabetic, so you'd gone to buy stevia and artificial sweeteners and all sorts of things to try and make cakes so that I too could enjoy them. Always a very special memory about how much you cared and took note about the people around you and their stories.
Jovan
Dear Luća, happy 100th birthday. What an extraordinary milestone, and what a privilege to be able to celebrate you. You're such a truly special lady, with a remarkable gift for understanding people so deeply. One of the things I've always admired is how you never forget anyone. You make each person feel seen, remembered, and valued, which is such a rare and beautiful quality. Your love of theatre, poetry, and art has always been so inspiring, and of course your special affection for Shakespeare adds such richness to who you are. You've lived a life filled with culture, warmth, and connection, and that shines through in the way you touch the lives of everyone around you. Wishing you the happiest 100th birthday, dear Luća, with love, joy, and many beautiful memories as you celebrate this incredible day.
Steve P

Happy, happy birthday, mommy. You've reached a hundred, and I'm sure that there's going to be many, many more happy and good, healthy years for you. Thank you for the respect you always showed, and everything you taught us. I really love you a lot. Sorry I couldn't be there, but there was something else I had to do. I wish I could be there. Love you lots, and may you have a blessed day further. Bye.
Peter And Disey Hammond
Hi Lucy, it's Pete and Dicey Hammond wishing you the very best wishes for 100 fabulous years, and we send all our love to you. We have such incredibly fond memories of you reciting poetry at family gatherings in Marsman Park in Western Australia, 20, 25 years ago. It's as vivid as the day you delivered those wonderful poems to all of us who were lucky enough to gather, and here you do them. We might be a bit late for your birthday, but hopefully not. But go well, and we wish you many more, and send all our love. Take care. And just one other thing, we also always loved your artwork, Lucy. What a talent you have brought to this world. Lots of love. Bye-bye.
